In Nicaragua exists a place where the power of nature, the legends and the history live together. This is at Masaya volcano national park.
In the days before the arrival of Cristobal Colon to America the Masaya volcano was worshiped by the aboriginal people. The aboriginals used to sacrife young madens and small children to try to please the gods for receiving blessings and avoiding their fury and curse.
Have ever you listened that someone had tried to exorcise a volcano? Well, it happened here in the 16th century, the Spaniards conquerors who believed that the devil and its demons inhabited within the volcano, placed a wooden cross close the top of the crater to fear the spirits and they named the crater: “the mouth of hell”.
This volcano has exploited many times in history, due this the surroundings have suffered a dramatic impact. The ashes and volcanic rocks still cover the area. There are more than three craters in the national park, the most important is on the Volcano Masaya, as visitor you will watch how huge is the crater and from here could start hiking the rest of the craters, from the main entrance it is 5 kilometers until the Masaya volcano located in the center of the park which is an area of 54 km². The park is open from 9 am until 4:45 pm.
The volcano possesses a tremendous view where you will see from the Apoyo lagoon and the Masaya city, also can enjoy the birds sighting which got used to live with the sulfur smock and house inside the craters. You can get the volcano also during the night, this national park offers a nocturnal tour from 5 pm to 8 pm every day, this schedule is perfect if you want to experience a nocturnal hiking and look at bats, they leave their caves at night in masse, in big number, perhaps for much people the sun is gone but for these animals the day just start. Don’t miss it, it’s a great spectacle.
As well at this nocturnal tour is more exciting the visit to the tunnels formed by former lava streams.
